This piece was produced by Gray’s Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, England, one of the most important centers of British ceramic production, often referred to as “The Potteries.” It dates to approximately the 1920s–1930s, a period between the two World Wars when British ceramics began to balance everyday functionality with artistic expression. During this time, Gray’s Pottery became known for creating wares that brought beauty into daily life, and this piece is a fine example of that philosophy.

Gray’s Pottery was founded in 1901 and reached its peak during the 1920s to 1940s. The company became widely known for its Art Deco–influenced designs, distinctive sponged or mottled glazes, and transfer-printed scenes depicting rural life. Production gradually declined after the 1940s, and the pottery closed around 1956. Throughout its history, Gray’s Pottery was guided by the idea of bringing art into everyday life, making well-designed objects accessible for daily use.
