History & Artistry
The Style: The design is based on Kalocsa embroidery, which dates back to the mid-19th century. Initially, the embroidery was strictly white (whitework), but by the early 20th century, it evolved into the vibrant, "sad" (darker) and "happy" (bright) floral patterns seen today.
The Motifs: The patterns are inspired by nature. You can clearly see the classic paprika peppers (at the top), which are the most iconic symbol of the Kalocsa region, alongside roses, cornflowers, and lilies.
The Background: While white porcelain is common, the black background (sometimes called "Midnight" or "Peasant" style) is highly sought after by collectors because it makes the hand-painted colors pop and mimics the look of
