When renowned photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto was commissioned to photograph the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis, the giant iron sculpture "Joe" by Richard Serra immediately caught his eye. It was one of the twisted spiral series, occupying the narrow courtyard of the museum. Viewers can walk through "Joe" via a narrow passage between the towering, sloping walls. As you proceed through the passage, you unexpectedly arrive at a central space, from which you can only see the curved iron walls and the sky. Sugimoto's photographs, included in this book, capture the elusive nature of Serra's work, with its combination of extremely soft light and dim darkness. Furthermore, the photographs are accompanied by words from Jonathan Safran Foer, a poignant prose poem about the "average Joe" facing the passage of time, which, though not directly referencing it, is reminiscent of Serra's sculpture. Moreover, what sets this beautiful large-format book, designed by Takaaki Matsumoto, apart is the tritoned illustrations printed on high-quality uncoated paper. This creates a visually appealing effect, eloquently speaking of time, impermanence, and memory.
