Slightly weathered yet sturdy and strong vintage Japanese Frog Lantern. This cast iron candle holder is meant to be set on a table or stand that is sturdy because it's heavy: 4 pounds 11 oz.
After doing research, it's from the mid 1900s to late 1900s. It is Japanese. I'm calling it Vintage instead of mid-century. It holds one small candle, spreads spectacular shadows on walls and ceilings in an organic, splotchy look. Door stays up and hinge is strong. Easy to light with extended lighter. Easy to keep clean, just dust. The piece itself (iron) is a combination of dark brown and bronze, light rust and beige patina.
It is meant for outdoors, but I have kept it inside most of the time except for when I want to use it on the deck. No worries about it tipping over because of its weight.
